The Boxing Academy offers education and development through the discipline of boxing to students who are at risk of exclusion, or have already been excluded from mainstream education. It started life as a small community project in a boxing gym, opening its doors to twelve students back in 2007. The method is built around creating a secure, consistent and disciplined environment which will enable the students to succeed. Staff are locally recruited and the relationships they build allow for genuine breakthroughs in behavior, conflict resolution and anger management as well as academic improvement.
“Our school is different because we provide for young people for whom the mainstream has been unsuccessful. We’re offering an alternative education, we believe if something isn’t working, try something different. It’s just being sensible. We ask: “does what you’re doing give you the result you need?” If not, you need to change. Boxing is a highly effective hook for disaffected young people.”
