Growing Communities is a community-led organisation based in Hackney, which is providing a real, practical alternative to the currently damaging food system – changing what we eat, how we eat and how it is farmed. For over 20 years, it has worked to harness the collective buying power and skills of its community to reshape the food and farming system. Its organic fruit and vegetable bag scheme and Farmers’ Market aim to provide more secure and fairer markets for the farmers, growers and producers who are the foundation of a sustainable agriculture system.
Through supporting agro-ecology, establishing urban farms and educating people about how to grow and cook with local, seasonal, sustainable produce, the organisation is providing a model for feeding urban communities in a post-carbon society.
“Innovation is constantly questioning the prevailing system and the damage it inflicts and striving for alternatives.”
